Description
PATROL OFFICER
• Job Summary:
Provide a wide variety of peace officer duties involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, criminal investigation, crime prevention and suppression, case preparation and court testimony, community policing, providing the public with service and information, and other assigned duties.
• Class Characteristics:
This is a full-time uniformed police officer, performing all duties required to effectively respond to and resolve the normal scope of police service calls. This class is distinguished as full-time sworn personnel with arrest powers.
• Examples of Duties:
Essential:
• Patrol assigned areas to ensure the security of life and property, observe and deter crime by providing high visibility.
• Answer calls for service and respond to emergency situations.
• Enforce state and federal laws, as well as city and county ordinances, issue citations as well, as verbal and warning.
• Investigate crimes, identify suspects, make arrests and transport prisoners, and interview witnesses as well as suspects and victims.
• Crime scene management, evidence collection, handling, preservation, and chain of custody.
• Restores order and maintains peace at public gatherings and in conflict situations.
• Prepares documents, writes reports, provide evidence and testimony in court.
• Investigates accidents, provides traffic control, and crowd control at special events.
• Provide emergency aid to the injured or sick until emergency medical personnel arrive.
• Provide direction and service or assistance to the public. Direct the activities of support personnel in field situations.
• Organize and participate in community policing events or programs
• Important:
Use standard office equipment in the course of routine work and drive a city vehicle in any weather and/or road conditions.
• Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
• Principles and practices of law enforcement, including but not limited to: Techniques and equipment used, field patrol techniques, crime scene investigation, suspect identification and apprehension, arrest techniques, pursuit policies, and prisoner transportation.
• Applicable laws, codes, ordinances, court decisions, and rules of evidence, as well as proper evidence handling.
• Safety practices and precautions, as well as firearms safety. First aid issues and practices.
• Techniques for dealing successfully with a variety of persons from ethnic backgrounds, as well as persons under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, in person or over the telephone, when relations are strained or confrontational.
Skill in:
• Interpreting and applying complex laws, procedures, and policies.
• Maintaining calm and the ability to take appropriate action in difficult situations
• Observe and accurately recall places, names, descriptive characteristics, and facts of the incident.
• Exercising sound judgment within procedural guidelines. Compiling clear and concise reports.
• Understanding and following written and verbal directives.
• Physical Demands:
Mobility to work in a typical office setting.
Drive a city motor vehicle to patrol and respond to calls in all environmental conditions.
Hearing and communicating in person, on the telephone, and on the radio.
Maintain physical and psychological levels to perform and meet the demands of the position.
• Working Conditions:
Attend meetings and functions outside of normal working hours.
Respond to major emergencies requiring command response at any hour of the day or day of the week.
Ability to work numerous hours in adverse climatic conditions. Work off hours, weekends, and holidays.
