Physical Agility Test and Written Test Required (April/May 2026 in Boise, Idaho – If selected, a $25 written test fee will apply. To attend testing, you must receive an invitation via email from the Ada County Sheriff’s Office). Interviews will be held the day after testing in Boise, Idaho. Selected candidates will attend the ACSO POST Academy beginning August 10, 2026. Academies run approximately 19 weeks and include daily physical training. General Summary: Supervises and maintains custody of inmates and provides security for the Ada County Jail. The incumbent uses personal judgment in the performance of duties, referring unusual, unique, or complex issues to the sergeant for advice and guidance. Shift Information: Day shift (6:48am – 7:00pm) or Night shift (6:48pm – 7:00am). Work week is four 12-hours shifts, then four days off (2,220 hours per year). Shift pick every six months. The jail is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This position requires you to work weekends, nights and holidays. JOB SUMMARY The primary purpose of this position is general duty police work involving protection of life and property, enforcement of laws, crime investigation, and service to the public. The employee has a significant impact on the quality of life through community partnership, strategic police patrols, and thorough investigations. Assignments may include, but are not limited to patrol, traffic investigations, canine, crime prevention or other police-related functions. The Sandpoint Police Department has a four-phase testing process to help choose the best candidate for the position. Phase One: Idaho Department of Labor Online The online exam will need to be completed and passed before the Physical fitness exam. Applicants will be required to complete the online Idaho Department of Labor test, which consists of the following topics Vocabulary – Typing – Spelling - Reading comprehension – Grammar -Arithmetic Phase Two: Idaho POST Physical Fitness Test The Idaho Peace Officer PFTB is comprised of five tests: Applicants who do not pass the physical fitness test will not be allowed to continue with the testing process. Phase Three: Oral board interview The oral board Interview is where the applicant appears before a group of at least 3 members from the department, or members of the community, and is asked a series of questions. Each of the members on the board then scores the applicant’s performance. For candidates who travel more than 4 hours to test, can request the interview via Zoom. Phase Four: Background investigation Pre-employment polygraph Medical examination (including vision and hearing examination) Psychological examination Final interview with the Chief and admin. Coordinates crime scene control and investigation, including interviews, interrogate and identification of witnesses. Processes crime scene and evidence collection; stores and maintains evidence property, including narcotics; may send evidence to other law enforcement agencies as required. Restores order, protects life and property, and maintains the peace at public gatherings and in conflict situations. Prepares and documents cases, completes reports and records, and prepares and maintains other logs and records; provides evidence and testimony in court. Investigates traffic accidents and provides traffic and crowd control as necessary; participates in special details and assignments. Provides emergency aid and assistance to incapacitated persons and requests additional response. Provides information, directions, and other services and assistance to the public. Directs the activities of police support personnel in field situations. Organizes and coordinates special assignments, such as crime prevention program in the schools and the community.
